OK, someone emailed this to me last night, too. While I don't deny the emotional power of this clip, I have to take issue with it being used as a metaphor for God's sacrifice of Jesus for our sins.
God did not accidentally lose his son. He did not sit by in pain and watch events beyond his control unfold.
He had a plan, one that would cost him and his son dearly; he foretold it for centuries; he orchestrated the perfect circumstances to bring about the plan: oh, how he cares for us! His son willingly gave his life, not as a result of a tragic accident, but by a supreme act of will and love.
And that is why this story doesn't even come close to telling me how God felt when he watched his son, powerful to save himself, allow himself to die, separated from his father, so that I could live.
